The British Embassy in Madrid hosted a seminar on the 21st of September which focused on the employment market and the new criteria for training and employment. The event was introduced by Giles Paxman (UK Ambassador in Spain) and Chris Grayling (Minister of State for Employment and Welfare Reform).
The seminar analysed the current situation of the Spanish employment market, the result of the legal reforms that have taken place over the past two years and the different private-public policies that may be introduced to facilitate new jobs for the unemployed, taking into account others countries’ experience in training and employment mediation.
Amongst the speakers were the Secretary of State for Employment, Maria Luz Rodríguez Fernández, Antonio Toro Barba (Director of Employment for the Spanish Public Sector) and the employment councillors for Madrid (Jesus Valverde) and the Basque Country (Gemma Zabaleta) all in representation of the Spanish Public Sector. Alan Cave (Employment Group Delivery Director, Jobcenter Plus) spoke in representation of the British Public Sector.
Three employment agencies (A4e, Maximus UK and Ingeus) all with vast international experience in mediation and training, participated in representation of the private sector, and Élogos represented the Spanish market.
Francisco J. García Molina , Head of the Employment Department at Irwin Mitchell Abogados, offered a practical analysis of the current changes in employment legislation and their effects on Spanish companies.
During the seminar the speakers explained the current efforts that are being carried out by the public sector in order to reduce the unemployment rate in Spain and emphasised the importance of the private sector using the experience of the British market as an example. The seminar focused on the need for reform within the basic institutions for Spanish employment rights, in order to offer business more legal security in matters affecting employment legislation.
